Course Description: The EUROVOLT course is an 18-week-online course dealing with the development of online vocational/professional language courses. It was developed as part of the EUROVOLT via VLE project (2006-2007). It consists of nine content units within the three main areas/modules of Teaching Online, Learning Online and Planning & Evaluation. The objectives are dealt with at two levels. Thus, trainees are able to work at a level that is beneficial to them with respect to their background knowledge, aims and ambitions. The course is conducted in English. The following issues are dealt with:
1. Teaching online
a) Teaching in a VLE (understanding and using VLEs)
b) Evaluating Internet resourses and creating and/or using multi-media material & resources (e.g. HotPotatoes, audio- and video-files, online corpora, weblogs, webquests, online radio/tv/podcasts/RSS) and designing online tasks and exercises for the target groups (from formulating instructions for individual learning task to ways of assessment.)
c) eModerating: Communication via Internet telephony (Skype), chat, discussion forum, e-mail, and feedback.
2. Learning Online
a) Online Assessment (online - and self-assessment: e.g. according to CEFR "can do statements", HotPotatoes, Dialang, Itembanker, Bulats)
b) Independent Learning (ePortfolio in relation to EUROPASS, eTandem, best practice models, self-directed learning materials and approaches)
c) Collaborative Learning (group dynamics, time management, psychological aspects)
3. Planning and Evaluating
a) Design an online course unit
b) Course design in a VLE
c) Organisational aspects: context, logistics and support, evaluation, budgeting, the POET principle (i.e. the interdependent nature of Pedagogy, Organisation, Economy and Technology)
Optional: Technical aspects and extra resources (VLEs, webpages, course ware/free ware, Learning Styles, Gender Mainstreaming etc.)
d) Final online seminar dealing with the EUROVOLT teacher training course evaluation and future plans
Working Modes:
This course represents a blended approach that combines collaboration online (with the other course trainees/peers and tutors) with individual reading and reflecting, practical work on trainees' own online courses, research on the Internet (discussions with colleagues at home, etc.). It should be emphasised that it is not an individual distance learning course. The exchange between trainees (among peers) is an essential part of this course, therefore it is vital that trainees are able to go online several times a week and participate in the online discussions on a regular basis.
The trainees have the opportunity to develop their own (model) online language courses on the international course platform MOODLE/at VHS Meidling if they have no access to an own platform/VLE.
Course Language: English, CEFR Level B 2 or higher.
